KEFALONIA
I begin this page with five
pictures of the waterfront of Patras,
Peloponnese, Greece, taken on my departure for Kefalonia, the
largest of the Ionian Islands of Greece. The ferry brings you to
Sami on Kefalonia, the site of the filming of Captain Corelli’s
Mandolin, a quiet, serene place, its waterfront strung with tavernas.
The main town of Kefalonia is Argostoli, situated on the tranquil Gulf
of Argostoli, where swans swim and the waterfront doubles as a fish
shop. Have a look at the catch of the day! While there I happened on a
funeral procession led by the town band - a solemn occasion. To the
north of Argostoli is the pretty village of Fiskardo. It’s a haven for
yachties - when I was there I counted seventy yachts moored along the
waterfront and in the bay. It’s a picture-perfect place which wasn’t
devastated by the earthquake so the old Venetian buildings have been
restored and repainted. Laid-back tavernas line the waterfront and
beautiful mansions stretch along the bay. A rich person’s paradise.
