Crete 2 - Knossos & North Coast
The amazing ruins of the Minoan town of  Knossos are a must-see for any visitors to Crete. Dating from
1700 BC, Knossos survived earthquakes and the aftermath of the volcanic eruption on Santorini, then was destroyed
by fire. The ruins were uncovered in the early 1900s, and although there is some criticism of the restorations at that
time, it is now possible to imagine the Palace and town as it must have been. Especially interesting are the many
frescoes, and the giant pithoi  (large ceramic jars).  The main towns of Iraklio, and Rethymnon are shown
here, also the  famous Lion Fountain of Spili, the Lefka Ori town of Lakki, the orange orchards of
Fournes, and the seaside town of Kissamos.
